Grace Place @ NIU Is an energetic Christian ministry in the heart of NIU.
This community and ministry is centered on welcoming and upbeat weekly worship with Holy Communion, community and global outreach, service and mission along with healthy doses of fellowship, food & fun!
Grace Place @ NIU is
- a safe haven for those struggling with faith and/or life issues
- a community that nurtures and strengthens faith growth and exploration
- a “home away from home” where all are welcome and where grace is offered joyfully
- both faithful to a rich theological tradition and driven by the challenges of the contemporary university.
Grace: The gift of unconditional love, kindness, acceptance and forgiveness offered by God through Holy Baptism, Holy Communion and daily renewal…
GRACE is a gift for all…no strings attached!
Grace Place @ NIU is an open and affirming Reconciled in Christ ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and The Episcopal Church.

what we do
Grace Place @ NIU provides numerous opportunities throughout the academic year for all those within the academic community and beyond to experience and explore grace in daily life and in the world…
Every Wednesday (during academic year)
Students are also encouraged to attend Sunday worship celebrations at the local congregations in the DeKalb/Sycamore area.
Book, movie and Bible studies suggested and led by student leaders
Service and Mission
Several local service projects are planned every semester: Crop Walk, helping out at Feed ‘em Soup, NIU Cares day, Red Cross Blood Drive and more.
Several service projects outside the community are planned each semester also: Feed My Starving Children, Chicago soup kitchens, prison ministry, PADS programs and more…
Each spring break the Grace Place community embarks upon an exciting mission in a distant state or country. In the past students have helped build a school in Guatemala, helped with Katrina clean-up in the south and spent a week learning about immigration issues at the Mexico/California border. Watch this page for more information on the exciting spring break mission trip planned for March 2012!
Another huge and popular event sponsored by Grace Place and the Lutheran Youth Organization of Northern Illinois Synod is the annual Jr Hi/Middle School Lock-in. Over 100 youth come to NIU to hang out with college and high school students, to learn about campus ministry, to worshp, play, eat and enjoy a full night.
Fun, Food and Fellowship
The Grace Place community is filled with joy. Students stop by Grace Place between classes to grab a free cup of coffee, take a nap or to check facebook or e-mail (free wi-fi and a computer for students who don’t want to lug around the lap top!). Many pause in the chapel for prayer, some come in and play the piano and the vast majority simply stop by to hang out with others. Generally free food is to be found and a warm, home-cooked meal is provided every Wednesday between 7:00 pm and ?...these meals are provided by local congregations that support this great ministry.
Several events are also planned each semester to help celebrate the joys of life: Christmas celebrations, Homecoming cookouts, graduation open houses and so much more.
